Analysis of next generation OPACs and book social networks

The rigorous thesis introduces selected foreign OPACs (Online public access catalogues) and book social networks.

The introductory part is devoted to the development of OPACs, their features and weaknesses. It notes the expansion of library collections with digital objects and development of web technologies, which necessarily change the view of library catalogues and enable development of next generation OPACs.

The core part of the thesis is an analysis of selected next generation OPACs and book social networks.

The analysis focuses on search capabilities, work with search results and implementation of various supplemental functions (RSS channels, book cover preview, user-defined tags, reviews, etc.) that most users recognize from blogs, various social networks, online bookstores, etc. Following catalogues are presented: AquaBrowser, Evergreen, Koha, Scriblio, SOPAC, VIRGObeta, VuFind a WorldCat Local. They are divided into four groups according to their basic properties: OPACs with closed source code, OPACs with open source code, OPACs which are part of a library system with open source code and OPACs with open source code based on a content management system.

The analysis of the book social networks is preceded by a brief chapter that introduces the functioning of social networks and their basic elements. The analysis itself is devoted to the search options, display of the search results, the implementation of supplementary features that affect the OPACs too and the user account options. The following systems are presented: LibraryThing and Shelfari.

The results of each analysis are summarized in the respective chapters.

The final chapter outlines possibilities for further development of the OPACs in the light of the increasing popularity of book social networks.
